Plexiglass & Lexan Safety Glass

Polycarbonate and acrylic sheets are the two main alternatives to glass in glazing applications. Each has its own pros and cons, and different recommended usage. In architectural applications, these sheets are generally available in thickness from 1/8″ to 1″ or more. Contact Glass Depots for any acrylic sheet and polycarbonate questions and requirements.

Acrylic mirrors are also available as an alternative to glass mirrors where safety is a concern.

Plexiglass Acrylic Sheets

Acrylic sheets, often called by trade name “plexi” or “Plexiglass,” are used where safety, handling and workability (bending, cutting, drilling) is desired, and affordability is important. Plexiglass sheets look very much like a regular pane of glass, but can be considerably safer and more convenient. Acrylic sheets do not break or crack as frequently as glass and are much easier to cut and work with. Plexiglass sheets are commonly used for window panes, greenhouses and other crafting projects. If you are looking for plexiglass sheets in Raleigh, call Glass Depots today.

Lexan Polycarbonate Sheets

Polycarbonate sheets, recognized by trade names such as “Lexan” or “hyzod”, are more expensive than acrylic. They are 250 times stronger than glass of the same thickness, and 30 times stronger than acrylic sheets. Both plastics are much less resistant to scratching, certain chemicals and deterioration than glass, but being lighter and stronger than glass, they are often used where safety and security are desired and other drawbacks less important.

Insulated Glass (IG) – (“double glass”)

Insulated or thermal glass units consist of two layers of glass separated by a spacer. The space between the glasses holds either air or a gas such as argon. The function of “double” glass is primarily to improve insulation by keeping the heat out or in the house, depending on the seasons. It also functions as a sound or noise barrier.

Because of many factors such as extreme heat, extreme cold, abnormal pressure build up, damage, deterioration or faulty workmanship, eventually IG units invariably fail. This is seen when moisture enters between the glass (foggy), and usually white sediment fills up the air space.

If this happens to your windows, it’s time to call Class Depots to replace them. No job is too big or too small.
